Is Kerala, the God’s own country, turning into a devil’s den?
Stray Dog Killing Continues…
More than 20 stray dogs were brutally killed after a panchayat in Kerala approved the killing. The decision came into effect due to the increasing number of attacks on the people from stray dogs. However, this killing by the local body puts them at odds with the state government. Indiscriminate stray dog killing was not discussed by the state government.
“We are doing this for the good of the people. The decision to give the go-ahead was taken unanimously by Panchayat members cutting across party lines.” said Sindhu P N, ward member, Chengamanadu Panchayat.
Jose Maveli, well-known philanthropist, provided the men who caught and killed dogs through asphyxiation. He was arrested on Monday on charges of killing stray dogs and was charged under sections 428, 429 and 149 of IPC, 120 of Kerala Police Act and Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals Act… Maveli was later granted bail!
“This will continue for a week or so until we are convinced that they don’t pose a threat. We have also taken up measures to reduce the accumulation of waste. Veterinarians don’t want to perform the procedure in the absence of infrastructure. They also fear someone may file a case against them if the animal died during the process,”said Sindhu P N.
Last week, a panchayat member and a Municipal Councillor in Ernakulam district were arrested after they killed violent stray dogs in their regions. But both of them received huge support from the public and members of the Stray Dog Free Movement.
