Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO)
The Concept
The Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) is holding the first India for Animals conference on January 29th-31st, 2011 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
The purpose of the conference, in broad terms, is to introduce Indian animal protectionists to new ideas, to help them improve their abilities, as organisations and as individuals, to inspire and energize their work; to provide a platform within which to feel a sense of fellowship with other animal protectors and overcome the isolation that we sometimes feel in our work; and to strengthen the animal protection movement in the country. This is the first time such a conference is to be held in India.
We plan to provide sessions that will help all of us to:
a. make our current work more effective, through learning new skills and sharing experiences
b. learn about animal protection issues outside our current focus areas to provide us with opportunities to help in these areas where possible
c. start to understand more deeply the social, political, legislative and cultural environment in which we work so that we can achieve long term changes for animals
The plenary sessions are mostly panel discussions, to allow the maximum amount of sharing and interaction. Panellists will consist of experts from the animal sector and also from other fields. These sessions will cover factors related to the big picture of animal protection in our country. The implications of the changing Indian culture and how we must develop new strategies to deal with these developments will be discussed. We will also look at how we can move animal protection from its current status as a marginal movement into the mainstream of social change, how to use legislation more effectively, and create better relationships with the media.
We plan to go more deeply into animal protection issues that need greater support and resources, such as farmed animals and animals used in research. Practical improvements on subjects such as shelter management and ABC programmes will also be discussed.
Sessions to develop ourselves and our organisations will be conducted – these will include human behaviour, campaign management, NGO accounting practices, public speaking and presentation skills, volunteer management and fundraising.
The conference will also expand on the Federation’s goals and activities, along with future plans, how these will benefit organisations in India and how organisations and individuals can get involved in building our country’s animal protection movement. The conference will also see the institution of awards for persons who have contributed to the furtherance of animal welfare in the country.
The FIAPO India for Animals conference flows directly from its inaugural agenda: to speak strongly with one voice; to learn from each other, pool resources when possible, and improve our capacity by accessing those with greater experience; and to inspire each other with new ideas.
Maximum Number of Participants: 200.
