Greetings,
I write to you as a concerned citizen of India.
Despite several complaints from local Animal Rights Organisations and volunteers, city officials have turned a blind eye to the most hideous torture, neglect and abuse perpetrated by the veterinarians, pound managers and staff at the Amberpet Dog pound, Autonagar Dog Pound, Jeedimatla Dog Pound, Patancheruvu Dog Pound and Zumerath Bazaar Dog Pound.
What is happening in Hyderabad Dog Pounds:
1. Dog pounds are maintained by GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Hyderabad).
2. These are torture houses for Dogs. Dogs are crammed into thick wired cages with no food, water or sufficient space to move. 10 to 15 dogs are crammed into a single cage meant for 1 or 2 dogs.
3. Puppies and Dogs which die due to starvation or disease are eaten by other severely starved dogs.
4. These places breed contagious diseases like parvo, carona, distemper, etc. Most of the dogs get infected and common scenes like defecation of bloody stools and bloody urine is visible.
5. The doctors are not properly trained to neuter the dogs. Improper sterilizations are carried out with unsterile medical equipments. Sometimes the operations are done by helping staff. Dogs with intestines out of surgery cuts or blood oozing out are a common sight. Puppies as young as 2 to 3 months old are neutered.
6. A large number of healthy dogs are euthanized clandestinely.
7. Most of the dogs become aggressive because they have to fight for food and these are killed mercilessly.
8. Even the injured or diseased, receive no medical help.
9. Only very few dogs are released, so funds keep flowing for this facility. Dogs die of hunger, trauma, and torture.
10. Pedigreed dogs which are caught are sold to breeders.
11. Other animals like pigs and monkeys are also brought to Dog Pound. Pigs are sold to pork shop while monkeys which should be sent to forest for rehabilitation are kept crammed in dog cages for days. Most of these monkeys are starved, diseased, sold for experimentation or dead before the time of release comes.
What is the real Motive/ Objective of these pounds:
1. Huge funds which are allocated for construction, maintenance of these pounds go missing and are not accounted for.
2. Food and medical supplies intended for the dogs go missing and the dogs end up suffering from hunger and illness.
3. Sterilization money keeps flowing in.
4. Breeders pay good money for pedigree dogs.
5. Monkeys, dogs are often sold to animal experimentation agencies.
6. Pigs are sold for meat.
7. These pounds are regular source of income for the caretakers of these pounds who exploit this facility to earn money in any possible way.
8. Local agencies or organizations are not opposing these pounds; seems to be hands in glove.
The pound veterinarians have abused and threatened the volunteers with violence if they attempted to try and feed or treat the inmate animals. Food and water troughs bought and donated by volunteers were rejected and the volunteers have since been barred from entering the premises ever since complaints were made.
Why are we opposing pounds & demanding their shut down:
1. These are most cruel places for animals.
2. Open and gross misappropriation of tax payers money.
3. Concept of pound increases population of dogs, when dogs are not returned to their original habitat. This is because immigration of newer dogs happens into these dog vacuum areas. This increases dog bites and rabies form new dogs.
4. In the absence of proper ABC-AR rabies, population, dog bites increase.
5. Huge sums of money which could have been used in controlling rabies, population and welfare of humans and animals is going waste.
What does the law say :
1. The dogs should be neutered under ABC(Animal Birth Control) Program, vaccinated and released at the same place where they are caught.
2. No dog can be killed, dislocated, removed from its original habitat.
3. Dogs should not be confined in facilities for more than a few days.
4. Large cages and clean facilities should be used. Sufficient food and water should be provided to each dog.
5. Pounds are illegal in India. Local ABC Units should be constructed in the city.
6. Young puppies, lactating mothers, and neutered dogs cannot be picked up.
7. Dogs should be caught humanely.
8. Dogs should be released at the same area where they were caught.
We would like to know, WHY HAS THE MAYOR TAKEN NO ACTION BEING TAKEN AGAINST THE POUND STAFF DESPITE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS FROM VOLUNTEERS. WHY HAS THE MAYOR TURNED A BLIND EYE TO THESE SHAMEFUL, INHUMANE POUNDS. We demand that the government , with the help of the regulatory boards and experts on animal welfare, restructure these pounds so they are run as proper ABC centers. Punish the veterinarians and staff for these crimes immediately and ensure that this never happens again.
In Distress,
